Passengers in Trucks
Quote from S Sillick on July 26, 2024, 10:00 amHi All,
For those at the Christchurch Forum yesterday, it was great to meet you all, well done HarmFree for bringing us all together.
I spoke to some yesterday that allow children to travel in their trucks and they have processes around this. I am wondering if you can share your processes with me. I cannot see any information to say that children cannot travel in long haul truck and trailers, any assistance would be appreciated. My email is sharron.sillick@bnd.co.nz thanking you in advance.

Under some circumstances we allow passengers in trucks. It carries a high level of risk and so initially you would need to carry out a risk assessment to ensure that your organisation has effective controls in place to minimise the risks so far as is reasonably practicable. You need to take into account things like:
- the age and maturity of the passenger
- the reason for allowing a passenger
- the frequency that it would happen
- the level of risk on the sites your drivers go to
- the procedures that your customers sites have in place
- the duration of the journey or task
- what passengers are permitted (e.g. family) and what passengers are not permitted (e.g. young children, hitchhikers etc.)
Once these have been decided then you would put in place a policy with some processes and responsibilities. Then the risk owner could sign it off. Its not as hard as it sounds.
